Blog Entry:
Well, it was the first night Lesa didn't get any northern light action so time to go home, lol. Mainly because the clouds moved in while we were having our campfire and then they stayed all night. It even started raining on and off during the early morning hours. As you can see from the cloud cover around camp it was a cloudy morning but the rain had stopped. All the rain we had and I never had to put the camper up or down in the rain that is two trips in a row, amazing. Well amazing to us, lol.
Not sure how many miles down the Cassiar we went but about 40 minutes later and bam our first grizzly bear on the Cassiar! Sow (female) eating alongside the road. No black bears this year which is a first but anytime we get to see a grizzly it is a bonus! She was on my side of the road which is good because she looked like a grumpy female. Every time I moved the vehicle she would look up and give me that look, you know the one. Come on I dare you to get out of that vehicle, go ahead make my day, lol. She was wet and very dark from the rain and cloud cover, would have liked to have gotten some pics of her with sun showing, especially since there was some colorful foliage around her.
At the end or start of the Cassiar depending which way your going there is a steeple that was saved from an old church that burned down many years ago about 30 feet away. I don't remember the specifics of it all but last time we stopped and took pics was on our first trip in 2008. We just felt like it was time to do that again.
The day slowly turned to some blue sky and then back to clouds then blue sky etc., does that when you drive 461 miles in a day. Pretty drive all day with trees changing colors and every now and then a glimpse of a snow covered mountain top, especially through Smithers. We decided last night that we would push on past Prince George today and start looking for a place to stay after that. With all the provincial campgrounds closed now we figured it was going to be boon docking, rec site or a private campground. Lesa found a private campground\Hipcamp in Hixon and since she had phone service booked us a spot next to the river. We are at Canyon Creek Campground and RV. You can see many people leave there trailers here over the winter and come back in the summer. Saying that we are the only ones here tonight, no campfire but listening to the river flow past camp.
Lesa and I have been talking about our trip next year and we are thinking we are going to back into Alberta, We really liked driving the Deh Cho and the Wood Buffalo\Pine Lake area, pretty sure it has been a decade since we have been up there. We always wanted to explore more of upper Alberta.
Some of you may wonder why we are exploring Canada so much. Lesa and I have been all over the USA in our younger decades. I have been to all 50 states and Lesa is just missing Maine. Besides just to many people down in the lower 48. We love the wild and the only place to really get to it by driving is in Canada and the upper parts of the provinces.
